Environmental Justice Art Museum by Tara Vasanth

I worked with Professor Alan Braddock from William & Mary’s Art and Art History Department to develop an online art museum called the EJAM.

EJAM explores the relationship between art and environmental justice in a variety of contemporary contexts, emphasizing the role of imagination and creativity in critical inquiry, public communication, education, and activism — and related dilemmas.

EJAM and the Environmental Humanities Hub are powered by a dedicated group of students and faculty members at the William & Mary whose interests and expertise span multiple departments and disciplines.

Professor Alan Braddock is the creator and director of this collaboratively-constructed online museum and its parent organization (The Hub). It’s a true pleasure to be a part of this initiative!

Please visit the EJAM website here.

Me & My Community by Tara Vasanth

As part of the aforementioned Javari Education Project, this is an original story that is featured in Lesson 1 of our online curriculum. This short story follows a young girl’s exciting tour of her neighborhood. We hope that this fun and playful book helps kids identify and appreciate all the special things that make their community a home.

Vaquita Porpoise Conservation by Tara Vasanth

The vaquita porpoise is a critically-endangered species endemic to the northern Gulf of California and is in imminent danger of extinction. Conservationists estimate that only between 6 to 10 vaquitas remain in the world, and the main threat to their survival is bycatch from commercial and illegal gillnet fisheries. Despite a number of attempts to discourage gillnet fishing, including a partial ban issued by the government in 2015 and a total ban issued in 2017, the vaquita population continues to dwindle. Sometimes, a movement is needed far more than a miracle. And it is precisely this interdisciplinary conservation movement that the critically-endangered vaquita porpoise needs so urgently.

Please see my report here.

The Flat Hat by Tara Vasanth

The Flat Hat has been the College of William and Mary's student newspaper since 1911! I am thrilled to be a part of this driven, diligent community of writers, photographers, and artists. I have been illustrating for the newspaper for my first two years, and am so proud to be the next Graphics Editor.

Foofaraw Podcast by Tara Vasanth

Without further ado, I am proud to present my and my friend Maddy’s new podcast show Foofaraw! Since the pandemic, I realized that I had ample time on my hands. So why not fill some of those hours doing something productive? Like creating a podcast that focuses on the peripheral, preposterous facts of our reality.

Hence, the name, Foofaraw; this word perfectly sums up the mission of the show. Foofaraw, by definition, means a great deal of fuss or attention given to a trivial thing.

If you are interested, please take a listen to our first episode (the link is provided below)! Foofaraw is now available on Spotify and iTunes too. Please email your feedback and/or ideas to: foofaraw.theworld@gmail.com

Hullabaloo, Goodnight Deep Blue! by Tara Vasanth

I’m so happy to introduce you to my second children's book, Hullabaloo, Goodnight Deep Blue! This book, also sponsored by the Dallas Zoo, is entirely dedicated to promoting ocean conservation and raising awareness about the critically-endangered vaquita porpoise. I loved studying videos and pictures of sea animals and had even more fun illustrating them! It was always a pleasure to return to my desk after a long day, grab my digital pencil and iPad, and start drawing and rhyming away.

The book is now available on Barnes & Noble. I hope you enjoy it and become better acquainted with the gentle, majestic vaquita (just like I did).

Hullabaloo, Good Morning Dallas Zoo! by Tara Vasanth

I am particularly excited to share a special project that I worked on during the summer of 2018!  Because of my love for art and animals, I partnered with the Dallas Zoo to create a children’s book entitled Hullabaloo, Good Morning Dallas Zoo. I collaborated with the Dallas Zoo to author, illustrate, and publish this children's book. Through IngramSpark, a self-publishing software service, the book is officially published in both e-book and print versions! I learned so much about self-publishing, and my experience volunteering at the Dallas Zoo has especially made this experience all the more meaningful.

The book is now available on the Amazon and Barnes & Noble websites. All proceeds go to the Dallas Zoo and toward conservation programs! The link below will direct you to the websites where the book can be purchased and delivered. I hope you enjoy it!
